What colors do Labrador Retrievers come in? There are only three AKC-recognized Labrador coat colors: black, yellow (ranging from pale cream to fox red), and chocolate. All three come from the same breed and gene pool — color is a genetic detail, not a different type of dog, and it doesn’t determine temperament.

If you’ve spent any time near Labrador owners, you’ve probably heard someone insist that yellow Labs are calmer, or that chocolate Labs are “crazier” than the rest. It’s one of the most repeated pieces of Labrador folklore, and it doesn’t hold up genetically. What color actually does affect is a little more interesting, and a little more useful to know before you pick a puppy: there’s real, peer-reviewed research linking one specific color to a measurably shorter lifespan.

The Three Recognized Labrador Colors

The AKC breed standard recognizes exactly three Labrador colors: black, yellow, and chocolate. A small white spot on the chest is permitted but not preferred, and any other color or color combination — including so-called “silver” or “charcoal” Labs — falls outside the official standard and raises real questions about ancestry. Black Labradors

Black is the original and most common Labrador color, and it’s the dominant color genetically — meaning it takes the least specific genetic combination to produce. Black Labs have a solid, glossy black coat with a black nose and eye rims. Historically, black was the preferred color in the breed’s early working and show lines, and it remains the most numerous color in most populations today.

Yellow Labradors (Cream to Fox Red Range)

“Yellow” covers a wide spectrum — from a very pale, almost white cream, through classic golden yellow, up to a deep fox-red that’s sometimes mistaken for a different breed entirely. All of these shades are genetically the same color category; the depth of shade is controlled by separate modifier genes layered on top of the base yellow genetics. Chocolate Labradors

Chocolate ranges from a light milk-chocolate shade to a very dark, almost black-brown. It’s the rarest of the three colors to occur naturally, since it requires a recessive gene combination from both parents. Chocolate Labs have brown noses and eye rims rather than black, and — as covered in detail below — the color comes with a genuine, research-documented health consideration worth knowing about before choosing one.

The Genetics Behind Coat Color (B and E Genes)

Labrador coat color comes down to two genes working together: the B gene (which controls whether pigment is black or brown) and the E gene (which controls whether that pigment shows up in the coat at all).

That last row is the key to understanding yellow Labs: a yellow Lab can genetically be a “black-based” yellow (nose stays black) or a “chocolate-based” yellow (nose is brown, sometimes called a “Dudley” nose), depending on their B genotype — you just can’t see it in their coat because the E gene is masking it.

Here’s what happens when two black Labs, each carrying one hidden copy of both the chocolate gene and the yellow gene (genotype BbEe), are bred together. This single cross can actually produce all three colors in one litter, in a 9:3:4 ratio:

This is exactly why two black-coated parents can produce chocolate or yellow puppies — both parents can carry hidden recessive genes that only show up when paired with a matching copy from the other parent.

Does Color Affect Temperament or Health?

Temperament: No credible genetic evidence links coat color to personality. The genes controlling black, yellow, and chocolate pigment (TYRP1 and MC1R) affect pigment production, not the genes associated with behavior or temperament. Any perceived personality differences between colors are far more likely explained by which lines (show vs. field) a particular color has historically been bred within, individual variation, and simple confirmation bias, not the color gene itself.

Health: This is where a real, documented difference exists. A 2018 study published in the peer-reviewed journal Canine Genetics and Epidemiology — a collaboration between the University of Sydney’s VetCompass program and the UK’s Royal Veterinary College, led by Professor Paul McGreevy — analyzed veterinary records for 33,320 Labrador Retrievers in the UK. The findings:

  • Chocolate Labradors had a median lifespan of 10.7 years, compared to 12.1 years for black and yellow Labradors — about 1.4 years, or 10%, shorter
  • Ear infections (otitis externa) affected 23.4% of chocolate Labs, versus 17.0% of yellow Labs and 12.8% of black Labs
  • Pyotraumatic dermatitis (“hot spots”) affected 4% of chocolate Labs, compared to 1.6% of yellow and 1.1% of black Labs
Important Nuance

The researchers were clear that the chocolate pigment itself doesn’t cause these problems. Their leading explanation is that breeding specifically for the rarer chocolate color has drawn from a narrower gene pool, which may have inadvertently concentrated genes linked to skin and ear conditions alongside the color genes. In other words: it’s very likely a breeding-practice effect associated with the color, not the color gene causing disease directly.

Color and Show vs. Field Lines

Color has historically tracked somewhat with breeding purpose. English (show/bench) lines have traditionally included a strong presence of black and yellow, with chocolate becoming more mainstream in show rings over recent decades. American (field/working) lines, bred primarily for hunting performance, have also produced all three colors, though certain color preferences vary by breeder and region rather than being fixed by line type. How to Predict a Litter’s Colors

Reputable breeders can often estimate the range of possible puppy colors in a litter by knowing both parents’ B and E genotypes, which can be confirmed through a simple DNA coat color test. Without genetic testing, a good rule of thumb: a litter can only produce chocolate puppies if both parents carry at least one copy of the recessive “b” gene, and can only produce yellow puppies if both parents carry at least one copy of the recessive “e” gene — regardless of what color the parents themselves are.
